B1 Level Story - Yağmurlu Bir Akşam

Akşamüstü hava birden bozdu. Gökyüzü kararıyordu, rüzgar giderek şiddetleniyordu. Camdan dışarı bakıyordum, insanlar hızla yürüyordu, bazıları koşuyordu. Yağmur başlamadan önce herkes eve yetişmeye çalışıyordu.

O sırada annem telefonla konuşuyordu. Bir yandan konuşuyor, bir yandan pencereden dışarı bakıyordu. Ben mutfakta çay hazırlıyordum. Su kaynıyordu, ben fincanları masaya koyuyordum. Tam çayı koyarken elektrikler gitti. Ev bir anda karanlık oldu.

Elektrikler gittiğinde yağmur başlamıştı. Gök gürlüyordu, şiddetli bir yağmur yağıyordu. Annem konuşmayı kesti, telefonu kapattı. Mum arıyorduk ama bulamıyorduk. Ben telefonumun ışığını açtığımda annem mum bulmak için dolapları karıştırıyordu.

O sırada aniden kapı çaldı. Kapı çaldığında ikimiz de şaşırdık. Bu saatte kimseyi beklemiyorduk. Kapıyı açtım. Komşumuz gelmişti. Çok telaşlıydı. Asansörde kalmışlar, sonunda çıkabilmişler.

Komşuyu içeri buyur ettik. Komşu salona geçti, oturdu. Annem ona su verdi. Biz konuşuyorken dışarıdan siren sesleri geliyordu. Meğer yağmur yüzünden sokakta bir araba kaymış. Kimse ciddi şekilde yaralanmamış ama trafik tamamen durmuş.

Bir süre sonra elektrikler geldi. Işıklar yanınca hepimiz rahatladık. Çay içtik, biraz sakinleştik. Komşu bir süre sonra evine döndü. O akşam geç yattık.

Ertesi gün mahallede herkes aynı şeyi konuşuyordu. Dün gece bazı evleri su basmış. Bizim alt sokaktaki market zarar görmüş. Yağmur devam ederken derin bir uykuya daldığım için ben hiç bir şey duymamışım. Öğrenince şaşırdım.

English Translation

In the late afternoon, the weather suddenly changed. The sky was getting darker, and the wind was gradually getting stronger. I was looking out of the window; people were walking quickly, and some of them were running. Everyone was trying to get home before the rain started.

At that moment, my mother was talking on the phone. She was talking and looking out of the window at the same time. I was making tea in the kitchen. The water was boiling, and I was putting the cups on the table. Just as I was pouring the tea, the electricity went out. The house suddenly became dark.

When the electricity went out, the rain had already started. Thunder was rumbling, and the rain was falling heavily. My mother stopped talking and hung up the phone. We were looking for candles, but we couldn’t find any. When I turned on the flashlight on my phone, my mother was searching through the cupboards to find a candle.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. When the doorbell rang, we were both surprised. We weren’t expecting anyone at that hour. I opened the door. It was our neighbor. She looked very nervous. Apparently, they had been stuck in the elevator and had finally managed to get out.

We invited our neighbor inside. She went into the living room and sat down. My mother gave her some water. While we were talking, we could hear sirens coming from outside. It turned out that a car had skidded on the street because of the rain. No one was seriously injured, but the traffic had completely stopped.

After a while, the electricity came back. When the lights came on, we all felt relieved. We drank tea and calmed down a bit. After some time, our neighbor went back home. We went to bed late that night.

The next day, everyone in the neighborhood was talking about the same thing. Apparently, some houses had been flooded the night before. The market on the lower street had been damaged. Since I had fallen into a deep sleep while the rain was still continuing, I hadn’t heard anything at all. I was surprised when I found out.
