Afiyet Olsun Meaning: More Than “Enjoy Your Meal” in Turkish

6 min read

If you eat with Turkish people, there is one expression you will almost certainly hear: Afiyet olsun!

It is usually translated as “Enjoy your meal” or “Bon appétit”, but these translations do not fully explain how Turkish people use it. Unlike its common English equivalent, afiyet olsun can be said before, during or even after a meal.

You may also hear another expression at the table: Eline sağlık!

Although both expressions are connected with food, they are not interchangeable:

Say afiyet olsun to the person eating. Say eline sağlık to the person who prepared the food.

Let’s look at their meanings, different forms and natural uses in everyday Turkish.

What Does “Afiyet Olsun” Mean?

The most natural English translation of afiyet olsun is:

  • Enjoy your meal.

  • Bon appétit.

  • I hope you enjoy it.

The word afiyet refers to health and well-being, while olsun means something similar to “may it be”. The expression therefore carries the idea that the food should bring health and goodness to the person eating it.

However, you do not need to translate it word for word every time. It is better to learn the situations in which Turkish speakers use it.

When Do Turkish People Say “Afiyet Olsun”?

Before Someone Starts Eating

You can say afiyet olsun when someone is about to begin a meal.

— Ben yemeğe başlıyorum.— Tamam, afiyet olsun!— Teşekkür ederim.

— I’m going to start eating.— All right, enjoy your meal!— Thank you.

A waiter, host or person serving the food may also say it when placing a dish on the table:

— Mantınız hazır. Afiyet olsun.— Teşekkür ederiz.

— Your mantı is ready. Enjoy your meal.— Thank you.

While Someone Is Eating

Imagine that you enter the office kitchen and see your colleague having lunch. You can greet them by saying:

— Afiyet olsun!— Teşekkür ederim.

This is completely natural in Turkish. You do not need to have prepared or served the food.

Similarly, if you walk past someone eating at a café or at home, afiyet olsun is a friendly and polite thing to say.

After the Meal

Turkish speakers can also say afiyet olsun when someone has already finished eating.

For example:

— Yemek çok güzeldi, teşekkür ederim.— Afiyet olsun.

— The meal was delicious, thank you.— I’m glad you enjoyed it.

This use often surprises Turkish learners because “Enjoy your meal” would sound too late after the meal in English. In Turkish, however, the expression is not strictly limited to the beginning of the meal.

When Serving a Drink or Snack

Afiyet olsun is not used only for full meals. You can also say it when serving:

  • coffee or tea,

  • cake,

  • fruit,

  • dessert,

  • a small snack,

  • almost any food or drink.

— Kahveniz hazır, afiyet olsun.— Teşekkür ederim.

— Your coffee is ready. Enjoy.— Thank you.

In English, we would not normally say “enjoy your meal” for a cup of coffee. Depending on the situation, a more natural translation might simply be “Enjoy!”

How Do You Respond to “Afiyet Olsun”?

The simplest and most common response is:

Teşekkür ederim. — Thank you.

You can also say:

  • Teşekkürler. — Thanks.

  • Sağ ol. — Thanks. / Cheers. (informal)

  • Sağ olun. — Thank you. (polite or plural)

For example:

— Afiyet olsun!— Teşekkürler!

You do not need a complicated answer. A brief thank-you is perfectly natural.

What Does “Eline Sağlık” Mean?

Eline sağlık is said to someone who has prepared food or created something through their own effort.

It literally refers to the health of the person’s hand, but its natural meaning is closer to:

  • Thank you for making this.

  • Well done.

  • You did a wonderful job.

  • Bless your hands.

After eating a meal prepared by a Turkish friend, you might say:

— Yemek çok lezzetliydi. Eline sağlık!

— The food was delicious. Thank you for making it!

This expression does more than compliment the flavour. It recognises the person’s time, skill and effort.

Eline Sağlık, Elinize Sağlık or Ellerine Sağlık?

The form changes according to your relationship with the person.

Expression

When to use it

Eline sağlık

With one person you know well

Elinize sağlık

With one person politely or with several people

Ellerine sağlık

A warm, informal variation

Ellerinize sağlık

A warm, polite or plural variation

Afiyet Olsun vs. Eline Sağlık

Here is the easiest way to remember the difference:

Expression

Who receives it?

Purpose

Afiyet olsun

The person eating or drinking

To wish them enjoyment and well-being

Eline sağlık

The person who prepared it

To appreciate their effort and skill

Consider this situation:

Your Turkish friend cooks dinner for you. Before you start eating, your friend says:

Afiyet olsun!

After you taste or finish the food, you say:

Eline sağlık, çok güzel olmuş!

Your friend may then reply:

Afiyet olsun, beğenmene sevindim.

This short exchange is very common in Turkish homes.

A Natural Turkish Dinner Conversation

— Yemek hazır, buyurun! — Çok güzel görünüyor. — Afiyet olsun. — Teşekkür ederim. Gerçekten çok lezzetli olmuş, elinize sağlık. — Afiyet olsun, beğenmenize sevindim.

English translation:

— The food is ready. Please, help yourselves! — It looks wonderful. — Enjoy your meal. — Thank you. It is really delicious. Thank you for making it. — I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Notice that the host uses afiyet olsun, while the guest uses elinize sağlık. Each expression has a different social purpose.

Can “Eline Sağlık” Be Used Outside the Kitchen?

Yes. Although it is very common after a meal, eline sağlık is not limited to cooking.

You can say it when someone:

  • makes a handmade gift,

  • repairs something,

  • paints a picture,

  • creates a decoration,

  • completes a craft project,

  • produces something through personal effort.

For example:

— Bu resmi sen mi yaptın? Ellerine sağlık, harika olmuş!

— Did you paint this? Well done, it looks wonderful!

The expression is especially appropriate when manual skill and effort are involved.

Common Mistakes Turkish Learners Make

Saying “Eline Sağlık” to the Person Eating

Eline sağlık praises the person who made something. If your colleague is eating a sandwich they bought from a shop, saying eline sağlık to them would not make sense.

Instead, say:

Afiyet olsun.

Thinking “Afiyet Olsun” Is Used Only Before a Meal

Many learners memorise afiyet olsun as the exact equivalent of “bon appétit”. They are then surprised when they hear it during or after a meal.

Remember that its use is more flexible in Turkish.

Translating the Expressions Word for Word

Literal translations such as “health to your hand” may help you understand the structure, but they do not communicate the natural meaning in English.

Learn the social situation, not only the translation.

Forgetting the Polite Form

When speaking to an older person, a customer or someone you do not know well, elinize sağlık is generally more appropriate than eline sağlık.

The difference comes from the same informal and polite distinction seen in:

  • sen and siz,

  • nasılsın and nasılsınız,

  • sağ ol and sağ olun.
